2020 South Carolina State Parks Come Out & Play 5K Series
On January 1st, 2020 become an Ultimate Outsider by racing along the park rangers inside Devils Fork State Park. The Ranger Run 5K course follows the paved road inside Devils Fork State Park from the main picnic area to the remote boat ramp and back again.
All ages, ability and experience levels are welcome to run with the rangers! This 5K road race is open to walkers, joggers, runners, strollers, assisted wheel chairs, independent wheel chairs, and dog walkers. We encourage everyone to participate. This course is fun but challenging, and will take you over the hills inside Devils Fork State Park down to the shoreline of Lake Jocassee and back to the picnic area. The Ranger Run 5K starts at 1 PM.
We will also have a kid's one mile fun run that will start at 12 PM on January 1st, 2020. This race will take place prior to the start of the Ranger Run 5K, and is intended for children 12 and under who are not quite ready for a 5K.
As part of our First Day Hike Series at state and national parks across the United States, we will also be providing a Park Ranger guided trail hike on the Oconee Bell Nature Trail (approximately 1.1 miles) at no cost. There is no registration for the First Day Hike, just bring comfortable hiking boots or shoes and dress for the weather. The guided nature hike also starts at 1 PM.
Stick around for the Loon Lunge, our version of the polar bear club, and jump into chilly Lake Jocassee after the race and hike! The annual Loon Lunge will commence after all runners and hikers have finished (approximately 2:30 PM).
Pets are permitted for the Ranger Run 5K, the ranger led guided hike and the Loon Lunge, but pets must be on a leash at all times.
The cost to participate in the First Day Ranger Run 5K is $25 per person plus registration fees, or the Kid's One Mile Fun Run is $10 plus registration fees per child 12 and under. All entry fees/donations to participate in the First Day 5K Ranger Run and/or the Kid's One Mile Fun Run support the Friends of Jocassee and Devils Fork State Park. T-shirts will be available for all 5K and kid's one mile run participants, as well as prizes and giveaways for top place 5k participants and all runners in kid's one mile race.
*Costs for same day registration increase to $30 plus registration fees for the Ranger Run 5K and $15 plus registration fees for the kid's one mile fun run.*
We encourage you to come out and get some exercise on the first day of the year, support a great park and a beautiful area, and have fun with the Devils Fork State Park Rangers and the Friends of Jocassee! Live up to your New Year's resolution, or just come jump in the lake!
